Forget the fireworks and champagne toasts. Ring in
the New Year with the whole family at First Night Austin 2007 New Year's
Celebration of the Arts. First Night Austin 2007 takes place from 2 pm until
midnight on December 31st in Downtown Austin along Cesar Chavez and the
Guadalupe / Lavaca area around Austin City Hall.
A few of the many events and activities to see, hear, and participate in:
Family Festival
Attend a Hip Hop Block Party and Pull-a-Print workshop. Watch Sarah Lipstate's "Chromascapes,"
Chinese Yo Yo Troupe, Clickety Cloggers. Participate in the Johnny Walker
Origami Workshop and watch puppet shows including the Cardboard Ice Cream Truck
Puppet Theater.
Grand Procession
From 5:30 to 6:30 pm the parade includes the Capitol City Highlanders Pipe Band,
Kung Fu-inspired dance with pedicabs, a giant human powered hamster art car,
Texas Juggling Society and the Austin One-Wheelers Unicycle Club, and a giant
H-E-B Shopping Cart as the pacesetter for the grand procession.
Dance / Music / Performance
At the Radisson Hotel West-facing facade enjoy aerial dance work by Blue Lapis
Dance. Relax to the solo cello music of Steve Bernal in the lobby of the Austin
City Hall. Discover what the New Year holds for you with Doctor Praetorius'
Wheel of Distiny.
Film / Video / Literary / Visual Art
Participate in The I of Texas where your eye could become part of the film/video
event. Attend a poetry slam at the Wells Fargo Upper Plaza. Get your good luck
from an 8-foot long Black Eyed Pea and post your wishes for the New Year in the
Circle of Wishes on the East Plaza of City Hall.
The Finale
Those with young children can ring in the New Year early at the Family Finale
following the Grand Procession. Or, stay up til midnight for the Grand Finale
featuring a drumming countdown and pyrotechnics at the Austin Fuzion site on the
First Street Bridge.
