4/8/2008 HOUSTON – The Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park announced its Spring 2008 winners, with mixed media artist Joe DeCamillis of Birmingham, Alabama capturing “Best of Show” honors. The 11th annual festival showcased the works of 300 artists from around the U.S. and the world who were jury-selected from a field of more than 900 applicants.

Joining DeCamillis in the coveted Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park winners circle were: Houston-based oil-on-canvas artist Kevin Peterson, making his first-ever art festival appearance (first place); Andrew Carson of Seattle, Washington, who creates whimsical sculptures with moving parts (second place); impressionist painter Jerry Fuhriman of Providence, Utah (third place); jewelry artist Lena Echelle of Dallas, Texas (“Best Booth Award”); and Yan Lee of Spring, Texas, who makes intricate line drawings of historical Texas trees (“People’s Choice” award.)

Award winners are jury-exempt for the Bayou City Art Festival for the next two years (four Festivals.) Deadline for submissions to Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, October 18-19 in downtown Houston, is Friday, May 2, 2008.

The Art Colony Association also announced the first, second and third place winners of its Emerging Artist Program for high school students in the categories of original installation art and 2-D art. The winners, whose works were selected by jury and exhibited at the three-day Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, are: Installation Art First Place - Reagan Mitchell, HSPVA; Second Place - Becky Brahm, Westside High School; and Third Place - Rachel Compson, HSPVA. For 2-D Art, the winners are: First Place - David Dubrack Millspaugh, Westside High School; Second Place - Brittany Walker, Pearland High School; and Third Place - Kema Njoku, HSPVA. Presentations are made of equal prize monies for the student/team and their school. The awards are First ($200 each), Second ($150 each), and Third place ($100 each), along with a ribbon, VIP Festival passes, a signed Festival poster, and a commemorative Festival T-shirt.
More than 30,000 arts patrons of all ages attended Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, which transforms a forested 1.1-mile picnic trail into a one-of-a-kind outdoor art gallery. The Festival was ranked #3 in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s 2007 “200 Best” Festivals, a list of the top-selling art festival events in the country voted by the artists themselves.

The judges were: Dan Allison, artist; Barbara and Marks Hinton, Orange Show Board member and noted Houston historian; Cindi Strauss, Curator, Modern & Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design, Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Christine Gervais, Assistant Curator, Modern & Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design, Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Ben de Soto, Houston Center of Photography, professional and fine art photographer; Jana Stiffell, artist, City Artworks Board member; April Gauss, art collector, teacher and former director of City ArtWorks; Cheryl Bowmer, executive director, Project Row Houses; Gwynne Rukenbrod, Center for Contemporary Craft, Curator of Fine Craft; Emily Sloan, multi-disciplinary artist, Art League of Houston; Laurie Humble, watercolor artist, Art League of Houston; Blaine Adams, Memorial Park Conservancy Board member; and Jon Reed, Diverseworks.

Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park showcases works representing 19 media formats. Featured artist Bruce Holwerda’s fantasy art piece “In the Fast Lane,” graced the Festival billboards, programs, T-shirts, brochures and signage.
The City of Houston, Budweiser Select, Houston Parks & Recreation Department, and KTRK-TV were the Festival sponsors. The Festival was funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

Over the past 37 years, the Art Colony Association, the 501c(3) organization that produces the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park and Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, has raised more than $2.4 million for local non-profit organizations. This year three new non-profit organizations have been added to the Festival’s 2008 Non-Profit Partners, City Artworks, Houston Center for Photography and Project Row Houses. The complete list of Nonprofit Partners includes: Art League Houston, Bering Omega Community Service, DiverseWorks Art Space, Downtown YMCA, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Lawndale Art Center, Memorial Park Conservancy, Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA), Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, Several Dancers Core, SPARK School Park Program, Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) and Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA). They will receive a percentage of Art Festival net proceeds.
