6/3/2009- The abiding image of the Tiananmen Massacre is that of a man, identity never known, standing in front of a line of tanks with two shopping bags in his hands.

Twenty years later, the shopping bag has become an emblem of the age, but only for what it might hold from the malls of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Times have changed. And yet, in some respects they have hardly moved.
