2/3/2007-- China is planning to
bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, an official has said.
Chinese member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), He Zhenliang said
at the Asian Winter Games that are being hosted in Changchun in northern China
that China is planning to bid for the Winter Olympics.
'I think with the improvement in the quality of life and the improvement of our
athletes we will soon be able to bid for the Winter Olympics,' Zhenliang said
Friday.
The Chinese national Olympic committee did not immediately comment on
Zhenliang's statement.
The next Summer Games will take place in Beijing in 2008.
China put in a bid for the 2010 Winter Games, but was eliminated in the
pre-selection. The 2014 Winter Games will be awarded by the IOC July 4 with
Austria's Salzburg, the South Korean city Pyeong Chang, and Sotchi in Russia in
the running.
