Houston Community News >> China Plans Population Growth Curb
4/29/2007 BEIJING (UPI) -- The
Chinese government is launching a new plan to curb the country's population
growth, Russia's Interfax News Agency reported. The plan would limit China's
population to 1.36 billion by 2010, and to 1.45 billion by 2020. The plan
reportedly calls for measures to stop the population's average age from rising
further.
"It is essential to ensure that the trend for the birth rate to go down is
sustained," the plan reportedly says.
One target of the plan is to step up general education standards.
"It is essential to extend compulsory nine-year education to the entire
territory of the country," the plan says.
