Brian is the first Hawaiian native ever drafted by Major League Soccer. He started playing soccer at age seven because his mom, Stephanie Whalen, wanted him to spend less time surfing. Brian agreed to play, but only if she coached. Brian majored in accounting at Gonzaga University, where he finished with a career 34 goals, the third-most in school history. He also holds the Gonzaga all-time record with 23 assists. His MLS career goals are 37 (11 goals from Houston Dynamo's inaugural season, with 4 goals scored in one game alone).
