hot spot for business and many Houston companies are doing business there,
sending staff over for a week or a month, and some companies are opening offices
there. Also, many importers here in Houston are working very closely with
Chinese exporters on many types of goods. So there is steadily becoming a need
for Adult Chinese Language Classes, which we are once again offering,” said
Bonnie Wei, educational coordinator, Chinese Community Center.
Classes that are offered are Adult Chinese Class Beginner 1, Adult Chinese Class
Beginner 2 and Beginner 3.
“These classes integrate pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, culture
and writing. Approximately 55 characters will be introduced in each level.
Beginner 1 and 2 classes will introduce pin-yin (phonics), basic conversations,
writing and grammar,” Wei said.
Intermediate levels will expand the student’s knowledge of grammatical
structures, vocabulary, and practice more complicated conversation patters.
Advance level will expand vocabulary, sentence structures and well as develop
one’s ability to advance reading, usage and to be fluent in oral expression and
writing.
“The beginner classes will meet for ten weeks on Saturdays, either from 9:30 –
11:30 or from noon to 2:00 or noon to 3:00 depending on the class,” Wei said.
The Chinese Community Center is also introducing two advanced classes, Chinese
Conversation and Apply Chinese.
“Chinese Conversation class and Applying Chinese class will meet on Wednesday
evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. All classes are ten weeks,” Wei said.
The Chinese Conversation class is a functional language program for intermediate
chinese learners. Developing Chinese vocabulary and phraseology used for travel,
business and other social life needs. Lessons in selected life related themes,
conversations, sentence patterns and most known characters. Pin-Yin knowledge is
required before registering.
Applying Chinese is also a functional language program for advanced Chinese
learners. In this class, students will refine and develop advanced vocabulary,
phraseology for use in business and to discuss hot topics. Moderate Chinese
listening and speaking fluency is required prior to registering.
