Houston Community News >> China Cleans Up Family Slogans
8/5/2007 BEIJING (UPI) -- The
Chinese government is taking measures to ban poorly worded and offensive slogans
that urge families to have fewer children. The National Population and Family
Planning Commission demanded the removal of publicly posted slogans that use
strong language like "One more baby means one more tomb."
China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the government is worried
that the strong language in the slogans will tarnish the image of the official
population control policy.
China implemented a family planning policy in 1979, allowing families to have
only one child, but the policy has reportedly been difficult to enforce in rural
areas.
The poorly worded slogans are to be replaced with gentler ones like "The mother
earth is too tired to sustain more children," Xinhua said.
