9/29/2010 Shanghai — It is difficult to say whether Bill Gates and Warren Buffett did more harm than good to the cause of Chinese philanthropy Wednesday.

The controversial dinner hosted by the two U.S. billionaires for
China’s super rich was suspect from the day the invitations went out. When word leaked out that some of China’s richest feared it was a charity shakedown and would avoid it, the local media dubbed it the “Hongmen Banquet” after an ancient Chinese myth about a warrior who invited his rival to dinner only to try to have him killed by a sword dancer.
