2/19/2009-- Global markets have stumbled because the very nature of our market-driven economic system is unsustainable, according to two political thinkers who spoke in İstanbul on Tuesday. As an example of unsustainable trade and development, Pentecost showed pictures of greenhouses on the arid Spanish coast, the agribusinesses situated directly behind resorts popular with tourists. She told of how large buyers dictate which seed stock the indoor farmers must use -- patented tomato seed from Holland -- and showed immigrant workers from North Africa living in shacks slapped together from old plastic and packing crates from the greenhouses.
