Designers also may travel frequently to meet with fabric and materials suppliers and with manufacturers who produce the final apparel products. Designers must have a strong sense of the esthetician eye for color and detail, a sense of balance and proportion, and an appreciation for beauty. Designers need to be able to understand these skills so they can give proper instructions as to how the garment should be constructed.

Women

Miuccia turned things around and steered the House of Prada towards the immense universe of men's and women's haute couture. By the 1990's, Prada became a leading force in men's and women's fashion. Valentino's men's and women's clothes rapidly become the aspiration of an international clientele that includes not only the Italian Royal family and Caruso, but also Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo and Fred Astaire. Armani also welcomed Hollywood stars to wear his men's and women's clothing designs at the Academy Awards, winning devotees such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster.

Guccio Gucci created most of his classic styles early during the 1950's; men's and women's clothing products such as luggage, ties, shoes, and the famous handbags sporting the bamboo handle. His collection for Yves Saint Laurent followed the lead of the previous season's Gucci women's wear, with form fitting Japanese kimonos and Asian patterned dresses, while the menswear collection featured classic-looking tuxedos and smoking jackets. Facchinetti was promoted to Creative Director of Women swear in 2004 and designed for two seasons before leaving the company after a management dispute. 32-year-old Frida Giannini, who had been responsible for designing men's and women's accessories, currently serves as Creative Director for the entire brand.

Women

Diesel Founded by Renzo Rosso in 1978, the company now is an innovative international design company, manufacturing jeans and casual men's and women's clothing as well as accessories. Oscar de la Renta is a high-end fashion designer of clothing, luxury goods, fragrances and accessories for men and women. Widely considered the most prominent American fashion designer, Klein was first awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award for outstanding design in both women swear and menswear in 1982, becoming the first designer ever to receive both honors in the same year.

Klein has received many accolades for his work and contribution to fashion: he won the Coty Award in 1973, 1974 and 1975 (making him the youngest designer to win these awards), and was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award for design in women and menswear in 1982, 1983, and 1986 (making history as the first designer to receive both awards in the same year), as well as the CDFA in 1993 for both women and menswear, and the America's Best Designer of 1993 Award. Most women of means had a dressmaker who would create garments according to the latest fashions. Those fantasies are constructed in glossy magazines oriented to professionals in general (Vanity Fair) and to women who follow the trends (Elle).

Color trends often originate in the fashion industry as a result of a fashion designer's inspiration. During the 1960s and 1970s the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, tweed suits, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit.
