11/5/2008 Houston, TX-- If it can be eaten, especially if it can be produced locally, someone in Houston has probably built a delicious multi-day taste-and-learn festival around it. Houston has so many annual celebrations of food and drink that it's hard to know which one to try first. Here's a hint: the best flavor comes from deep in the generous heart of Texas.

Chocolate Festival of Texas
The Humble Civic Center is home to the sweetest contest in the Houston area. Professional chefs, amateur confectioners, and culinary students alike are invited to compete in the Chocolate Competition, the main event at the Chocolate Festival of Texas. Two chocolate-making presentations are given during the two-day festival, courtesy of the Culinary Institute Alain & Marie LeNotre and the Taste of Home Cooking School. Several vendors are also on hand to offer cooking-related products while festival guests wait to see who made the best chocolate. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is the big winner of the day, though, with a sweet donation from the profits.

The Grand Wine & Food Affair
Wine tasting and gourmet food always go well together, and this annual tradition highlights the best in both. Houston's Grand Wine & Food Affair provides its patrons with a different event at a different location every day for five days. Featuring flights and scenic drives to local vineyards, the theme of the week is pairing the perfect dish with the perfect wine. The black tie event, the bistro brunch, the Sip & Stroll, and the wine luncheon are all elegantly designed to illustrate the proper use of wine with different types of food. Proceeds from the festival support its own scholarship fund at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Restaurant and Hotel Management.

The Shoulda Been a Cowboy Association (SBACA) BBQ Cook-Off
Spring is a great time of year to get out the grill in Houston, and this grill-fest is cooking for a great cause. The SBACA holds a BBQ Cook-Off every year to help disabled cowboys in need. Teams compete in five BBQ categories: Beans, Bloody Mary, Brisket, Open, and Ribs. They can also win awards for cleanest area, most colorful space, and best all-around area. Enjoy the live music, bring the kids to meet the cowboys, and see if you can have fun by guessing the winners of the silent auction before everyone else does.

Houston Press Menu of Menus
Over 40 local restaurants gather together every year at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, sponsored by the Houston Press for the benefit of Child Advocates, Inc., and the Museum itself. The Menu of Menus is an opportunity to sample the signature dishes from a scrumptious variety of sources, and to taste the drinks that go along with each item on the menu. The annual event is so popular that, in order to keep it at the Museum, attendance is now limited to 2000 guests. Take the opportunity to try something new, give your compliments to the chef yourself, and have a great time participating in the ultimate taste test of the best food in Houston!
