5/26/2006 HOUSTON- After increasing last week, gasoline prices reversed course again and moved downward as motorists gear up for the Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch.

In Texas, the current average is $2.794 a gallon -- a weekly decrease of six cents. Houston gas prices dropped 4.9 cents to $2.89 a gallon for the week. The Galveston-Texas City area has the highest priced gasoline this week at $2.908 a gallon -- down nearly four cents. Corpus Christi has the lowest average at $2.564 a gallon -- about 15 cents less than last week.

"This week's decrease in gas price averages is welcome news for travelers this Memorial Day weekend," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "However, pump prices in Texas still remain nearly 80 cents higher than a year ago. Despite these prices, Texans are expected to continue with their travel plans for the holiday." The national average for regular self-serve gasoline is $2.863 a gallon -- down six cents.
