Houston Community News >>
7/15/2009 (Houston, TX) -- Due the
sluggish local job market, the members of the Vietnamese American
community of the Houston metropolitan area have announced holding a Job
Fair to assist local English-challenged job seekers in the Asian
American communities.
The community has recognized that many recent immigrants from Asia & the Middle East are facing particular difficulties in finding gainful employment due to language challenges. In particular, recent refugees from war torn regions of Burma, Iraq, & Nepal are facing drastic reductions in basic humanitarian support due to the local charitable supporting agencies recent fiscal shortfalls. Many of these individuals have only the most basic of English skills, so have an increased difficulty in finding initial job opportunities. Job seekers in the Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, & other Asian communities have been invited to participate as well. On the flip side, many employers seeking to find bi-lingual employees to enhance their effectiveness in delivering services to a broad variety of ethnic clients continue to have challenges to reach potential candidates.
To address these needs, Nha Viet, Vietnamese Civic Center 11360 Bellaire Blvd, Suite 900 Houston TX 77072 will hold their first Asian Job Fair on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Vietnamese Civic Center is a non-profit charity made up of Board Members and other community volunteers seeking to best serve the Vietnamese-American community of Houston, Texas. Many employers from the Houston community have been invited to participate in providing job opportunities to appropriate job candidates.
Examples of prospective employers who have agreed to participate to date in outreach to consider these immigrants include Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, Harris County Precinct 5 Constable Office, Walden Internet Village, Southern Noodle Company, ACE Merchant Processing, Mary Kay Global, & many more.
Some of the social service agencies who plan to participate include Texas Workforce Commission, Catholic Charities, InterFaith Ministries, YMCA of Houston, Asian American Family Services, & Houston Asian Jaycees.
This event will take place indoors in the approximately 5000 sq ft townhall facility of the Viet Civic Center. While the focus of the event is specifically targeted to native Asian language job seekers, this event is equal opportunity and anyone may participate. Job seekers are encouraged to bring copies of their resume, if any, but need to note this is NOT a prerequisite for participation, just a plus. Space still exists for more employers to participate. The new deadline for prospective employers & social service agencies to register to attend is Friday, July 17, 2009 so that proper arrangements can be made.
