6/18/2008 Houston-- Through the first four months of 2008, the Houston Airport System (HAS) served a record 17 million passengers. An estimated 4.3 million passengers traveled through Houston’s airports during the month of April 2008 alone, according to the latest traffic figures released this month by HAS.

International passenger traffic and air cargo shipments continued registering the most significant increases through this time period. Total international air cargo traffic increased by a dramatic 15.3 percent during the month of April 2008, while year-to-date total international passenger traffic, through the same month, increased by 7.2 percent.

New longer haul aircraft and open skies agreements such as the one recently approved by the United States and the European Union have added new destinations and increased frequencies for George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Both Continental Airlines and British Airways kicked off new service to Heathrow Airport in London during the month of March 2008, boosting traffic figures through the month of April.

William P. Hobby Airport registered a significant year-over-year increase of 7.5 percent through the month of April 2008, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007.

The international regions with the most significant passenger traffic increases through the month of April 2008 were Central and South America combined, with a year-over-year increase of 14 percent; Europe, with a 9 percent increase; Canada, with a 6 percent increase, and Mexico, with an increase of 3 percent.

Among the top performing cargo airlines for the month were Lufthansa, with a 13 percent year-over-year increase, Federal Express, with a 12.5 percent increase; and British Airways with an 8 percent increase.

The international regions with the most significant growth in air cargo traffic during the month of April 2008 were Mexico, Europe, and Central and South America combined, with respective year-over-year increases of 125 percent, 24 percent and 21.4 percent, all in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007.
