6/8/2007 Houston-- The 2007 World Refugee Day Committee welcomes the city of Houston to this year's World Refugee Day celebration. Refugees are an essential part of our city's diverse community. This year we will be commemorating the day with a celebration on Saturday, June 23rd, from 12:30 to 5:30 pm at Houston Community College, located at 1300 Holman (parking at San Jacinto at Alabama). The event will include screenings of the documentary Settling in Seattle, paintings and photographs celebrating the refugee experience, entertainment, and refreshments.

Settling in Seattle, which follows the resettlement journey of refugees from four different countries, will be shown at 1:30 and 3:30 pm in Lecture Hall Room 151. All activities are free and open to the public. For more information email

This year's Houston World Refugee Day Committee is comprised of individuals representing the Alliance for Multicultural Community Services, Boat People SOS, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Houston Independent School District, Houston Community College, Houston Grand Opera, Interfaith Ministries, Mayor's Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs, United Nations Association, and YMCA International.
