Houston Community News >> Internet Nationalism of the Younger Generation
5/15/2007-- Dong-A Ilbo of
Korea and the Asahi Daily News of Japan co-hosted an annual symposium between
Korean, Chinese and Japanese think tanks, titled “Korean, Chinese and Japanese
new generations and the future of Northeast Asia.” The symposium took place on
May 12 at Lotte Hotel in Seoul and included testimony from experts from the
three Asian nations. Participates identified characteristics of each nation’
younger generation and discussed ways to develop a tripartite relationship.
Experts from academia and journalism have warned that emerging Internet
nationalism may undermine the relationship between the three countries. They
argue that measures need to be taken for a better future.
A commentator of Asahi said, “Compared to the past, people-to-people exchanges
have dramatically increased. But Internet nationalism has notably arisen as a
counter product.”
As a solution to this newly emerging phenomenon, participants, including Yoo
Seok-jin, a professor at Sogang University, proposed something similar to
Europe’s “Erasmus Project” and exchange expansion among the three nations. The
Erasmus Project is a European educational program exchanging undergraduates and
graduates between one hundred or so schools in Europe funded by governments
since 1987.
