5/21/2007-- THE FIRST XO laptops for the OLPC foundation will roll out of a Shanghai production line in September, according to the Taiwan Economic News. The machines are put together by Taiwanese ODM manufacturer Quanta, and the chief tech officer of the OLPC told the newspaper that it's started a project to make $50 laptops.

However, the XO itself will cost $175 at launch, according to the report, which said it uses an XL700 AMD CPU, has 256MB of memory, and 1GB of flash. An embedded Microsoft OS adds a total of $23 to the bill of materials.
