Houston Community News >> Shanghai Scraps Tallest Ferris Wheel Plan
1/13/2007 Shanghai - China's
booming financial hub of Shanghai has ditched plans to build the world's tallest
Ferris wheel and will build a skyscraper in its place, state media said.
The wheel would have stood about 200 meters high and have 36 cabins able to take
more than 1 000 visitors at a time, Xinhua news agency said in a report seen
Friday.
It would have stripped the world's-tallest title from the 135-metre London Eye,
and could have cost up to 800-million yuan (about R700-million), Xinhua said.
But a Chinese Ferris wheel could still have its day in the sun, as a developer
in China's landlocked eastern province of Jiangxi wants to register its
160-metre-high wheel as the world's tallest.
