Houston Community News >> Yo-Yo Ma's Family Help Chinese Quake Victims
5/13/2008-- To many neighbors, Marina Ma
of Long Beach is known as the mother of Yo-Yo Ma, the world-famous cello
player.
Watching TV news this week, though, Ma recalled a long-ago phase of her life, as an unmarried college student in central China nearly six decades ago. She has been anxiously viewing the scenes of Sichuan Province, where rescuers are trying to free residents pinned under collapsed buildings.
"So much destruction -- oh my dear," said Ma, 84. Like many immigrants from central China, she is transfixed by the images on the screen.
