The Menil Collection is among the best private art collections in the country if
not the world. The collection was put together by Jean and Dominique de Menil
who arrived in this country in the forties. They came here to escape the war in
Europe and began purchasing and commissioning works of arts in Houston. They
contributed much to the city and helped to bring much culture and history to the
area. Their private collection includes works of art from a variety of
categories. They have art in the areas of antiquity, Byzantine and medieval art,
tribal art and 20th century art. The main collection is housed in a building
designed by Renzo Piano and it is so large that only a portion of it can be
displayed at any one time.
In addition to the main building there are also four satellite buildings, the
most famous of witch houses 14 paintings by Mark Rothko. There is also the
Byzantine Fresno Chapel Museum, a museum housing the works of Cy Twombly and
Richmond Hall which house a neon light installation from Don Flavin. As you can
see, there is a lot to take in. The Menil Collection in Houston is very
