Sylvan Beach Festival and Crawfish Jam. The 51st Annual Sylvan Beach Festival and Crawfish Jam is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2007. Gates will open at 9:00am at historic Sylvan Beach Park on lovely Galveston Bay. The festival will kick off with a parade which will begin at 10:00am. DaCamera Society - Omar Sosa Quartet. 8pm. Charismatic Latin jazz pianist Omar Sosa offers a joyful mix of jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, combining percussive forays inside the piano with his inspired, passionate playing at the keyboard. Musiqa Houston - Sonnets and Stories. 7:30pm. Houston Symphony Assistant Conductor Rebecca Miller leads performances of Pierre Jalbert’s Icefield Sonnets for soprano, baritone and ensemble, based on the poetry of Anthony Hawley, and Karim Al-Zand’s Parizade and the Singing Tree for narrator and ensemble, based on a tale from the "Arabian Nights." Dance Collage: Heaven & Earth. Taking audiences on a journey from the east to the west uniting authentic Chinese classical and folkdances with the newest modern, jazz, and ballet works by Houston's renown choreographers. Stages Theatre - I Am My Own Wife. Winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, this masterful one-man show includes 40 different characters and explores the astonishing true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite and celebrated antiques dealer who lived openly as a cross-dresser under the Nazi and Communist regimes. The Great Wall of China: Photographs by Chen Changfen. thru Aug.12, 2007. Born in 1941, Chen Changfen became a professional photographer at 18, and six years later, in 1965, photographed the Great Wall of China for the first time. Although he has continually photographed the wall over the last 30 years, the project was most actively pursued after the Cultural Revolution when he needed a restorative project. The Masterpieces of French Painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1800-1920. MFAH is the only museum in the United States to host the Met´s treasured collection of French masterpieces while the galleries undergo renovation. This is an extraordinary display of 135 paintings, including masterpieces by van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Ingres, Bonnard, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Corot, Courbet, and Monet.
